Our team has created an electronic bidding system on Android tablets to facilitate the autumn salmon auction held at the Utoro fishing port in Shari, Hokkaido every year from September to November.
Traditionally, the auction involved physical bidding, with intermediaries examining the fish and submitting their bids on paper in a designated room.
Our system aims to reduce bidding time and collect data by offering an Android tablet app that allows intermediaries to enter their bids and a web application that enables them to manage bidding data through a PC browser.
Our Electronic Bidding System is primarily intended for use in fishing ports. Therefore, the hardware must possess superior waterproofing and dust proofing capabilities.
Our goal in designing the application UI was to prioritize an intuitive design that allows for extreme ease of use.
In a bidding scenario where every second counts and the freshness of the fish is crucial, a poorly designed application UI can lead to time loss. As such, we sought user feedback and incorporated it into the system's design and implementation.
The Utoro fishing port is a large port capable of accommodating up to seven ships.
Before adopting our system, intermediaries had to walk from one end of the port to the other to inspect the salmon and make bids one ship at a time in a dedicated room called the bidding room.
As a result, they had to repeat this process of inspecting and returning to the bidding room multiple times, which took up a lot of time.
With the introduction of our Electronic Bidding System, intermediaries can now participate in multiple bids simultaneously on tablets, resulting in a reduction in bidding time.
In addition, the waiting time for fishing boats, which had to wait for the completion of the bidding before unloading their catch, has been significantly reduced, allowing intermediaries to inspect the fish in a fresher state.
Before our system was adopted, bidding results were recorded on paper and checked manually. However, with the introduction of our system, the bidding process has been digitized, allowing for the reference of past data, tracking of bidding progress, and analysis of bidding data.
By digitizing daily bidding, all data can be managed, and trends such as annual catch and bidding prices can now be analyzed.
Furthermore, we are currently considering adding functionality to output bidding data in various data formats in the future.
