We have developed a technology to detect the position of curling stones from camera images and visualize the trajectory of stones through joint research with Kitami Institute of Technology and Future Hakodate University.
Curling, also known as chess on ice, is a sport that requires a sophisticated and precise strategy at all times, but most of the technical analysis relies on the senses and rules of thumb of each player. This system aims to digitize the prediction of Stone's behavior, which is one of the curling team tactics, and visualizes the "stopping position of the stone" and "the trajectory of the stone".
Twelve monochrome cameras are installed on the ceiling of the Algo Graphics Kitami Curling Hall, a facility dedicated to curling all year round in Kitami City, Hokkaido. The infrared LEDs mounted on the curling stone are detected by a camera, the position of the stone is measured, and the infrared LED module laid under the ice surface is calibrated to visualize the measured coordinates and the trajectory of the stone in chronological orderEnables efficient strategy design that does not rely on players' experience
Curling stones weighing about 20 kg have their own characteristics, and depending on the stone, it is necessary to change the throwing method and strategy, but identifying the characteristics of the stone had to rely on the player's rule of thumb.
In the past, we used the method of throwing at the same line at the same speed in a limited time, writing down the position where the stone stopped in a notebook, sharing the information with the team, and then formulating a strategy, but after the introduction of the stone tracking system, not only the characteristics of the stone but also the characteristics of the players can be visualized as data, and statistical analysis and efficient strategy design are possible. It became possible.
The Stone Tracking System is a technology that is also used by Japan's top curlers who have competed in the Olympic Games. As an IT company, IENTER contributes to improving the performance of curlers by providing technologies that combine sports × technologies, such as stone tracking systems and image analysis systems. Going forward, we will continue to support top athletes in Japan and overseas, as well as future athletes, to improve their technical capabilities.
